“I associate myself much more with Gen X than I ever will with Gen Y. To even suggest that my 13 year-old brother, who knows nothing of life before Columbine, 9/11, and the Internet, is having a similar childhood to the one I had is absurd.”— east village idiot: Gen Y can bite me
Point taken, but wouldn’t your 13 year old brother be considered a Millenial?
Actually, the terms Millennial and Generation Y have been used interchangably for years to describe people born from roughly around 1980 to roughly around 2000.
Howe and Strauss’ Millennials Rising was released in 2000 and specifically referenced those already in high school and college as ushering in “the next great generation.” Among their hilarious predictions for this decade:
- Pop music will become more melodic and singable and sitcoms more melodramatic and wholesome
- There will be a new emphasis on manners, modesty, and old-fashioned gender courtesies
- Gen Yers will rebel against the culture by cleaning it up
- Gen Yers will resolve long-standing debates about substance abuse
As we’ve seen, nothing of the sort has happened, and these days I’m starting to believe that the tail end of Generation Y, with text messaging, sexting, awful music, reality television, and short attention span, will usher in the end of modern language, good taste, intelligent discourse, and ultimately, the end of civilization.
