Sometimes, I get into a mess of procrastination and it leads me to learn something about my hometown.
Reservoir Avenue (shown in red on this 1888 USGS map) is a “main drag” that runs through my hometown of Cranston, Rhode Island and the neighboring city of Providence. I never knew why it was called Reservoir Avenue, as there was seemingly no reservoir of any kind nearby.
Turns out it was named for the Sockanosset Reservoir, which was constructed in 1870 to serve the water needs of Providence. The hilltop reservoir pumped water from the Pawtuxet River at Pettaconsett, where a water pumping and treatment station still exists. Then, it used gravity to send water downhill into the city of Providence.
The reservoir was eventually eliminated when concerns of industrial pollution in the Pawtuxet necessitated the construction of the Scituate Reservoir in the 1920s, which is still Providence’s water source today.
There’s virtually no sign of the Sockanosset Reservoir today, and the Glen Hills neighborhood of Cranston now stands where it once stood.
Another interesting tidbit I came across: in addition to the Sockanosset Reservoir, Providence was also served by the Hope Reservoir on Providence’s College Hill. Hope High School now stands in its place.
