This is a tweet today from the chairman of the MTA, Joe Lhota.
In the middle of one of the biggest crises his agency has ever faced… at a time when the New York City subway system faces a potential catastrophe… he wastes time tweeting about a flimsy New York Post article that blames bike sharrows on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn for slow traffic (purely anecdotally, based on no actual data, in an article with a basis - that there are bike lanes all along Fifth Avenue - is completely false). Then Lhota goes one step further and blames legitimate bike infrastructure that’s been proven to improve safety for an increase in accidents between buses and bikes.
This is completely unacceptable, and he should be held accountable for this. He just lost one of his agency’s biggest defenders in me because of this… and will likely lose plenty of other bike advocates who regularly rally for transit, too.
