Councilman Domenic Recchia (D-Bensonhurst) put out this statement on his blog:
I’m proud to announce that a controversial set of bike lanes proposed to run through Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst will not be moving forward.
What a fucking scumbag. He flat-out said, “I’m proud to have stopped a safety improvement for the people of my district.”
The street was the perfect candidate for these lanes. It’s wide enough to be four lanes wide, but only two are marked, causing jockeying for position, double- (and triple-) parking, and speeding.
Instead, the street will continue to have car lanes WIDER THAN AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY in a mainly residential neighborhood. Tell me, Councilman, that that’s safe. No, it’s convenient for you, and the richer, powerful constituents you have that are “above” riding public transit or taking a bike and choose to drive their cars.
This double-speak is disgusting.
