A scene to keep in mind the next time you want to curse a working cyclist for resorting to the sidewalk (via Streetsblog New York City)
No, sorry. Past studies in other cities (Orlando and Fort Collins, specifically) show that cyclist injuries and collisions with cars are actually MORE likely to occur when the cyclist is using the sidewalk. Mandating that cyclists use the road makes their movements more visible to drivers for longer periods of time than when they’re hidden behind parked cars or street trees.
This is a horrific scene, and yes, it gives us pause to consider these delivery cyclists risk their lives everyday to make a pittance. But we’d see a lot more scenes like this if sidewalk cycling was legal in New York. Scenes like this do not justify breaking the law.
