WPIX: MTA Public Hearing Tonight, Cooper Union: Half of Manhattan’s Subway Booths to Close?

eastvillagefeed:

MTA considering closing over 50% of their Subway booths as a cost-cutting measure. Residents speak out tonight.

From WPIX:

The MTA is planning to permanently close or reduce the hours of more than half of the subway station booths and kiosks in Manhattan, and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is calling for opposition.
The cost-cutting move by the MTA would affect 49 of 86 subway stations throughout the city, directly affecting the safety of subway riders Stringer said in a press release. Stringer, along with Assembly Member Wright and TWU Local 100 President John Samuelson, are urging New Yorkers to join them at MTA public hearings on July 13 and 14.

More “quality” reporting by WPIX. Fact check: there are 468 stations ”throughout the city.” But more importantly, who really cares? The people who work in these booths and kiosks offer no service to New Yorkers and get paid more than I do. Their jobs became obsolete the second that Metrocard Vending Machines got up and running. If token booth agents are supposed to be a safety deterrent, why do crimes happen so often under their watch? All they can do is call the authorities while they sit behind bulletproof glass.

I’m in full support of laying off ALL of the token booth agents and replacing them with additional police officers that can actually keep people safe, rather than give people a false sense of security.
