A second after this photo was snapped, I fell backwards halfway to the floor before being pulled back up by everyone around me.

I was completely sober at the time.

Nobody ever comes to my stupid birthday party. In college, everyone had to study for exams, and now that we are grown up, everyone has to go to stupid holiday crap. Next year I’m celebrating my half birthday instead and finally getting that pool party I’ve always wanted.

At least the strippers will show. Right?!?!

My birthday is next week, but I’ve been celebrating my half-birthday for a few years. Everyone shows up, I can have my party outside, and if I have a joint half-birthday party with someone, I can argue that “two halves make a whole.”

However, it has poured rain on my half-birthday party for the past two years. I think the birthday gods frown upon half-birthday celerations.

Non-New Yorkers occasionally ask how I can possibly handle all the inconveniences of NYC.

Step one: move into a building that has a laundry room.

Fact: I haven’t done my own laundry in New York in almost four years. I have a nice Korean lady named Li who always greets me by name, folds my clothes flat and tight, and even carries my laundry bag out to the door so I can sling it over my shoulder. Despite the expense, I’ve never doubted its worth.

I will miss this when I leave the city.

Tonight’s Dinner: Posole (Ancho Pork and Hominy Stew)

2 tablespoons ancho chile powder

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 pounds pork tenderloin, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1 tablespoon olive oil, divided

2 cups chopped onion

3/4 cups chopped green bell pepper

3/4 cups chopped red bell pepper

1 small can of diced green chiles

1 tablespoon minced garlic

2 1/2 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth

1 (28-ounce) can hominy, drained

1 (14.5-ounce) can fire-roasted diced tomatoes, undrained

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; set 1 1/2 teaspoons spice mixture aside. Add pork to remaining spice mixture in bowl, tossing well to coat.

Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add pork mixture to pan; cook 5 minutes or until browned, stirring occasionally. Remove pork from pan; set aside. Add remaining 1 teaspoon oil to pan. Add onion, bell peppers, and garlic; sauté 5 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Return pork to pan. Add reserved 1 1/2 teaspoons spice mixture, chile peppers, broth, hominy, and tomatoes; bring to a boil. Partially cover, reduce heat, and simmer 25 minutes.
